On these pages you will find a range of good practice case studies. Each case study offers insights into the experience of teachers in a variety of settings and aims to help teachers build their expertise.

NAEP case study 15

Subject: Inclusion
Date of issue: Mar. 2008

This large urban mixed comprehensive school has over 1000 students on roll and faces many challenges: it serves one of the poorest council wards in Greater London; unemployment is high; its free school meal percentage is the highest in the local authority (LA); there is considerable student mobility, including a high proportion of refugees and asylum seekers; and well over half of the students are learning English as an additional language (EAL).

NAEP case study 14

Subject: Inclusion
Date of issue: Mar. 2008

This high school is an average size (1060), mixed, 11–18 comprehensive. It has a diverse student intake: 60% of pupils come from minority ethnic backgrounds, with just over half speaking English as an additional language (EAL). Students speak a wide range of languages and a significant number are at early stages of learning English. Asylum seekers account for 15% of pupils and there is higher than average mobility. The proportion of students on free school meals is well above average, and above average for those with special educational needs.

NAEP case study 13

Subject: Inclusion
Date of issue: Mar. 2008

This school is a large (1430), mixed, 11–18 comprehensive school in an outer London borough. Its intake is diverse: 78% of students come from minority ethnic backgrounds, with 53% speaking English as an additional language (EAL). Although a total of 58 languages are spoken by students, only seven of the languages have more than 30 speakers: English, Turkish, Somali, Greek, Bengali, Kurdish and Albanian. There is higher than average mobility: 4.5% of pupils are new migrants. The percentage of pupils on free school meals is well above average.
