November 2007: Ethnic Minority Achievement Grant (EMAG) Continuation

The Minister for Schools and Learners Jim Knight announced on 12 November, the three-year school funding settlement for every local authority in England for 2008-11.

As part  of this settlement the Department has increased the amount of Ethnic Minority Achievement Grant available for the next three year spending period as follows: 2008-09, £187.6 million; 2009-10, £197.6 million; 2010-11, £206.6 million. Further details of the grant can be found in the Standards Fund Circular 2008-11.  Final allocations for 2008-2009 and indicative allocations for 2009-2010 and  2010-2011 are set out at Annex C of the Circular.

The Department has also introduced as part of the Dedicated Schools Grant (DSG) arrangements for 2008-2011 an Exceptional Circumstances Grant (ECG). This grant recognises pressures on school budgets which can arise as a result of new arrivals joining the school between the January count date, (which determines the DSG allocation), and the start of the academic year. It is designed to support authorities experiencing rapid growth in pupil numbers, or a significant influx of children with English as an Additional Language. Details of this grant can also be found in the Standards Fund Circular.
